Peony - beautiful and healthy
Leaf peony
Fine-leaved Peony - Paeonia tenuifolia. Family of buttercups - Ranunculaceae.
Popular names: azure flower, funnel (Kursk, Voronezh region), greenery (Saratov region), Voronets, red azure (Karachay-Cherkess Autonomous Region).
Description. A perennial herb with lumpy, oblong roots. Leaves twice-thrice dissected into small linear lobes. The flowers are large, regular, blood red, a five-leafed calyx, five to seven corolla petals, many stamens, several pistils. The fruit is a combined leaflet of two or three fluffy folded leaflets. Height 15 - 30 cm.

Flowering time. May.
Spread. It is found in the southern and middle strip of the European part of the USSR.
Habitat. Grows on steppe slopes, slopes of beams and shrubs.
Frequency appliedb. Grass (stems, leaves, flowers) and root cones.
Pick time. Grass with tubers is harvested in May, root cones - in the fall.
Chemical composition. Not studied. Root cones are known to contain cardiac glucosides. The plant is poisonous.

Application. In folk medicine of the Karachay-Cherkess Autonomous Region, water infusion of herbs in small doses is drunk for heart diseases. In folk medicine of the Caucasus, an aqueous infusion of root cones is used for anemia, coughing and for sobering up drunk.
A green dye is obtained from the plant.
Internal use of a thin-leaved peony as a poisonous plant requires great care.
Mode of application. 1 teaspoon of dry grass of peony leaves insist ‘/ 2 hours in 3 cups boiling water, strain. Take 1 tablespoon 3 times a day 10-15 minutes before eating.

Peony Evasive - Paeonia anomala. Family of buttercups - Ranun-culaceae.
Popular names: marin grass (Arkhangelsk region), marin root, heart berries.
Description. Perennial herb with brown-brown thick branchy root. The stems are straight, unbranched, with leathery scales at the base. The leaves are alternate, twice or thrice divided into narrow lanceolate lobes. The flowers are large, red or pale pink, a cup of five sepals, corolla petals five or more, there are many stamens, two or five pistils with an upper ovary. Fruit - a combined leaflet (consists of several rejected leaflets). Seeds are large, black, elliptical. Height 60-100 cm.

Flowering time. May June.
Spread. It is found in the forest strip of the northeastern regions of the European part of Russia, in the forest strip of Siberia and in the mountain forest regions of eastern Kazakhstan.
Habitat. It grows along the edges of coniferous, mixed and small-leaved forests, in subalpine high-grass meadows, in fields.
Applicable part. The roots
Pick time. Fall
Chemical composition. The roots contain essential oil (up to 1.1%), salicin glucoside, sugars (up to 10%), starch (up to 78.5%), tannin and a small amount of alkaloids. The composition of the essential oil includes peonol, methyl salicylate, benzoic and salicylic acids. The plant is very poisonous.

Application. Water root infusion increases appetite and acidity of gastric juice, improves digestion and has a calming (sedative) and analgesic effect.
Infusion of the roots is used for various gastric diseases, jaundice, female diseases, epilepsy and other nervous diseases.
Internal use of peony, as a highly poisonous plant, requires great care.
